Muhsin Ertugral has stepped down as head coach of Golden Arrows, one year after taking up the post with the Premiership side

Ertugral’s resignation follows a 3-1 loss to Free State Stars in their first-round Telkom Knockout match in Bethlehem on Saturday.

The coastal side have also battled in the league this season, lying 13th in the standings with only one win after seven games.

“Muhsin Ertugral has taken a decision to step down as the head coach of the club,” Arrows said in a statement on their website.

“Ertugral took this decision in view of the fact that results have not been forthcoming for the club despite the hard work and effort that he has invested in the position since the beginning of the season.”

Ertugral said he had made the decision based on the needs of the club.

“It is always difficult to make decisions such as these but I honestly believe I am acting in the best interests of everyone here,” said the Turkish coach.

“I know that there is appreciation for the fact that I have put the interests of the club first.

“The current situation is not through lack of trying or anything like that.

“When results are not forthcoming it becomes a situation which one needs to be realistic about, and make decisions which are for the good of the entire club.”

Ertugal said he believed the side could achieve more under new management.

“Sometimes a change can have a positive effect and change the fortunes of a club,” he said.

“This is a club which has great potential and I believe it is only a question of time before things improve.

“I have enjoyed my time here and worked well with the management and the players.”

Ertugral, who had previously coached Premiership sides Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town, joined Arrows in October 2011.
