Soccer hooligan jailed for goalkeeper attack

A football hooligan has been jailed for 16 weeks for attacking former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland during a pitch invasion in a second-tier League Championship match.

Aaron Cawley, a 21-year-old from Cheltenham, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and entering the field of play when he appeared Monday at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court.

Kirkland needed medical treatment after being shoved in the face and to the ground amid violent scenes during his Sheffield Wednesday side’s match against Leeds at Hillsborough, which was broadcast live on British television on Friday.

The Football Association has launched an investigation into the crowd trouble at the game, which also saw bottles being thrown onto the pitch and offensive chanting from both sets of fans.
