INACTIVITY has been attributed to Noni Tenge's loss to Layla McCarter during a World Boxing Association (WBA) female junior middleweight title at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday.

Not only did Tenge admit such, her conqueror, McCarter, said as much after the fight. Despite that McCarter paid tribute to Tenge, saying she is a good boxer who will go far with her career.

Prior to Sunday's fight, Tenge had not laced her gloves to engage in competition boxing in almost 16 months while McCarter's last fight before Sunday was in August last year. Before clashing with McCarter, Tenge last fought when she stopped New Zealander Daniella Smith, at Carnival City in Brakpan on June 11 last year.

"She was very quick and I couldn't pin her down with my right hook," said Tenge.

"Being inactive cost me during the fight and I couldn't catch her the way I wanted to. I really need to be active and fight four or five times a year. Layla is a good boxer, but I still say that I'm not afraid of her and would fight her even in America."

McCarter said about Tenge: "Noni is a great boxer, but her biggest disadvantage is that she is inexperienced. There was no way that she could beat a boxer who has fought 52 times.

"She needs to engage in more fights so that she can get some experience. I proved during the fight that experience and skill work."

A forthright Luis Tapia, who is McCarter's trainer, said: "Noni made a big mistake by taking this fight. I blame her camp for taking this fight as she fought against an experienced boxer and had no chance of winning the bout.

"Noni has a very big heart. But a big heart without skills will not take you far in boxing. Noni needs more experience in order for her to be in the same league as Layla."

McCarter, meanwhile, has promised to give Tenge a rematch if the Mdantsane-based boxer wants to fight her again. And Tenge is happy that McCarter is willing to square up against her for the second time.

"I'm prepared to give Noni a rematch if she wants to fight me again," said McCarter.

Tenge said: "I wouldn't mind fighting her again and prove myself. I believe I can beat her."

Meanwhile, Sabelo Jubatha cut a lonely figure at the corner of the anteroom at the Orient Theatre after losing his South African featherweight title to Sydney Maluleka on Sunday.

Jubatha blamed fight referee Andile Matika for losing his title.
