Kickoff of NFD delayed

THE Premier Soccer League has indefinitely suspended the kickoff of the National First Division, which has opted to operate as a stand-alone structure.

The matches were scheduled to kick off this weekend, but PSL acting chief executive Cambridge Mokanyane said the new kickoff will be decided by the board of governors.

Mokanyane said the NFD fixtures will remain suspended pending a special general meeting towards the end of the month to discuss and expand on the league's decision to go it alone.

This follows a resolution adopted at the special general meeting earlier this month, where members agreed that the NFD should be a stand-alone league in an effort to make it more viable as a brand.

PSL clubs will have to decide on the amount that will be donated to the NFD sides as a solidarity fund for league prizes, travel and accommodation expenses at the meeting in two weeks' time. The PSL clubs have been sponsoring the NFD since the departure of sponsor Mvelaphanda.

Jabu Khumalo, boss of NFD side African Warriors, said: "We are confident that the stand-alone National First Division will grow as a big sporting brand in South Africa and on the continent.

"We have many companies that we intend approaching to sponsor us, including television companies to broadcast our matches."
