Barca, Real keep distance

MADRID - There was no change at the top of the Spanish Liga on Saturday because twin giants Real Madrid and Barcelona both won.

Real hammered hapless Osasuna 5-1 while Barca beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0.

These results left Real with 78 points from 30 games, six above Barca. In addition, the whites have scored 100 goals in and are on course to break their own record of 107 goals established in 1990.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace against Osasuna and now has an astonishing total of 37 goals to his name - one more than Barcelona idol Lionel Messi - and is well placed to break his own record of 40 from last season.

Real coach Jose Mourinho said: "We are delighted that the game turned out well. We attacked very well today, then we showed mental stability by controlling the match."

Xabi Alonso, Real's midfield anchorman, commented that "we are very pleased with this result".

However, the Spanish international refused to accept that his team are cruising to the title.

"There is still a long way to go and we still need to win many more games."

Later on Saturday, Barca beat Bilbao 2-0 with goals from Andres Iniesta and Messi, who now has 36 to his name. Barca coach Josep Guardiola rested veterans Carles Puyol and Xavi, with his mind on tomorrow's Champions League showdown against AC Milan. Bilbao rested several players ahead of Thursday's Europa League clash against Schalke 04.
