Bucs eager to reel in Downs

ORLANDO Pirates travel to Pretoria tonight on a mission to move to within one point of Premiership log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns when the two sides clash at Loftus tonight.

This keenly anticipated fixture has all the hallmarks of a thriller.

The Brazilians top the standings with 40 points from 20 matches and The Buccaneers are breathing heavily down their necks in second spot with 36.

Trusty Bucs attacker Benni McCarthy, who scored a brace in their 3-2 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend, is confident they will pull off another vital win in their quest to defend their league title.

"It is good we are playing against big clubs and better so that we can get them out of the way. We hope to continue from where we left off against Chiefs," McCarthy said.

"We just need to take along our scoring boots to Pretoria. People always remember the player or players who scored in big matches and I also want to score again in a big match. But for me the most important thing is to contribute to the success of Pirates in all the games we play.

"We are going all out for a win to reduce the gap between us and Sundowns. This is very crucial match for us," said the Bucs marksman who has scored seven times in the league so far.

Sundowns' joint assistant coach Alex "Barnes" Bapela is brimming with confidence and believes they will have the beating of Pirates.

"Pirates are playing well, besides their 3-0 defeat by Santos. I think their minds were on the derby when they played Santos. If there is a club posing a threat for us to win the league, it should be Pirates," said Bapela. "Pirates have a great team with Benni doing so well."

Speedy Bucs winger Tlou Segolela also seems to have regained his old form.

Teko Modise and Lebogang Mokoena are also doing well at Sundowns and they could orchestrate their former club's downfall if they are taken lightly.

Their fist-round match ended in a 0-0 draw.

Kickoff is at 7.30pm.

Tomorrow's fixtures:

Moruleng: Platinum Stars vs SuperSport United (3.30pm), Athlone: Santos vs Lamontville Golden Arrows (7.30pm), Charles Mopeli: Free State Stars vs Ajax Cape Town (7.30pm) and Harry Gwala: Maritzburg United vs Black Leopards (7.30pm).
