Vargas gets his chance

ALTHOUGH Brazilian goalie Gertulio Vargas might not have featured for Orlando Pirates in an official game this season, he has been registered for the African Champions League.

Pirates begin their quest to recapture the African Champions League title with a home match against Angola's CRD Libolo in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Vargas is one of the three short-stoppers registered for the tournament, which Pirates won in 1995 to become the only southern Africa club to achieve this rare feat.

The other two goalkeepers are Moeneeb Josephs and Senzo Meyiwa.

The Buccaneers registered Vargas ahead of rising star and Under-23 international Brighton Mhlongo because of the former's massive experience after playing in Brazil and Europe.

New recruits like Portuguese Louis Boa Morte, Sifiso Myeni and Thandani Ntshumayelo, who were signed after the close of registration window period last month, will not feature in the first round.

Pirates will only be allowed to register them if they qualify for the second round proper of this money-spinning tournament.

Should Pirates eliminate the Angolan champions, they will meet Nigerian runners-up and CAF Confederations Cup semifinalists Sunshine Stars. A win over Sunshine Stars will then see Pirates meet either Mali runners-up Djoliba, or the winner of the preliminary round tie between Uganda Revenue Authority and Lesotho Correctional Services.

After signing an array of household names like Benni McCarthy, Niger's Boubacar Talatou and Tokelo Rantie, Khoza is confident the current squad have what it takes to emulate the Class of '95.

McCarthy is on record saying he wanted to become the first SA player to win both the Uefa and African champions league titles. He won the Uefa Champions League with Porto back in 2004.

Bucs' Class of '95 includes Jerry Sikhosana, John Moeti, Gavin Lane, Teboho Moloi and Marks Maponyane amongst others.
