South African makes history in blind cricket

Becomes the first player to make a century in the Blind Cricket T20 World Cup

Visually-impaired South African cricketer Joe Schroeder set a record on the opening day of the Blind Cricket T20 World Cup on Sunday, becoming the first player to make a century in the inaugural tournament.

While the South Africans lost their opening match by seven wickets against Sri Lanka, Schroeder earned the Man of the Match award as the first South African player in the B1 category, for totally blind players, to score 100 runs in any format of the game.

“It was a phenomenal performance for a B1 player, considering the introduction of blackout sunglasses,” said South African team manager Philip Bam.

“A great learning experience for all and something to build on.”

South Africa were set to face Pakistan in their second match of the tournament on Monday.
