Maazou gives Chippa runaround

PRINCE Olomu and Bongi Macala are among several players who have arrived in Cape Town over the past few days to try out at struggling Chippa United.

But the big Niger international, Moussa Maazou, who the club have been expecting for weeks, is still to arrive and might not be coming after all.

"His agent says he has a few reservations and we've been hearing that he is on his way for weeks now," said caretaker coach Farouk Abrahams.

Maazou, who bamboozled Bafana Bafana's defence when the national team lost 2-0 in Niamey in a Nations Cup qualifier last year, would be a major coup for the Premier Soccer League new boys.

Owner Siviwe Mpengesi says he has already paid money to Maazou as a signing-on fee. The player previously competed in the Belgian, French and Russian leagues and made a strong impression at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Gabon in January. Maazou played for Niger last night in a friendly against Senegal along with Chippa United goalkeeper Kassaly Daouda.

Abrahams says he will be looking at trialists tomorrow when Chippa play a friendly against National First Division outfit Santos.

Olomu played for former African Champions League winners Enyimba of Nigeria but has faded since his glory days at Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic. He was the runner-up in the top goalscorer stakes just two season ago.

Flying wingback Macala is a former under-23 international released by Santos after relegation in June.
