SA draw first Australian test

The first Test match between South Africa and Australia in Brisbane has ended in a draw.

Australia declared their first innings at 565 for five, with Australian captain Michael Clarke 259 not out, in the morning session to leave South Africa 115 runs behind with just over two sessions to play.

Alviro Petersen perished before lunch for five following a loose stroke outside off stump and Proteas captain Graeme Smith was caught at gulley for 23 after the break.

The Proteas' first innings centurions Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis then steadied the innings with a partnership 47 before Amla was caught for 38 at short cover.

Jacques Kallis was on 49, a run away from his 100th score in Test cricket of 50 or more, when Australian off spinner Nathan Lyon got a ball to bounce more than expected with Clarke taking a reflex catch at slip.

Lyon then trapped a tentative Jacques Rudolph on the crease for 11 before the draw was agreed with 11 overs remaining in the day as the Proteas shut up shop.

AB de Villiers finished on 29 not out and Vernon Philander one not out, with South Africa on 166 for five holding a lead of 51 when the match came to an end.
