A BRACE by second-half substitute Kingston Nkhatha and one from Lehlohonolo Majoro steered Kaizer Chiefs to a 3-0 win over Lamontville Golden Arrows in a Premiership match here last night.

Chiefs were businesslike from the first whistle, exerting pressure on Arrows, who were still trying to settle down.

The hosts were in complete control of the proceedings in all departments in the early stages of the encounter, clearly eager to consolidate their top spot on the log.

And they did it in great fashion.

The home side were using the wings to launch their attacks, with Siboniso Gaxa operating on the right and Keegan Ritchie on the left. Chiefs were rewarded for their efforts when Majoro scored his fourth league goal of the season after a pass from Siphiwe Tshabalala in the 12th minute.

Majoro superbly unleashed a ground shot which caught goalkeeper Pavels Steinbors in slumberland. Three minutes later, an unmarked Majoro fluffed a golden opportunity with Steinbors all at sea as Chiefs stepped up the gear.

Arrows' pleas for a penalty in the 24th minute fell on deaf ears, and referee Zolile Mthetho instead booked Philani Shange for diving after a tackle from Mulomowandau Mathoho.

The KwaZulu-Natal side, however, showed a more improved performance in the second half as they frequented Chiefs' goal area but still failed to score. Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter was incensed with his team's performance as Arrows begun to control the game.

Sensing danger, Baxter introduced Willard Katsande and Nkhatha for George Lebese and Matthew Rusike respectively in the 65th minute.

Nkhatha made his presence felt when he scored against the run of play in the 74th minute to ease the pressure on Chiefs as they were in all sorts of troubles from Arrows.

He beat an off-side trap to easily get his third league goal of the season.

Nkhatha put the match beyond Arrows' reach in the 80th minute.

Prior to the start of the game, Amakhosi suffered a major blow after it was announced that their trusted striker Bernard Parker failed a late fitness test after sustaining an ankle injury at training last week.

At interval, Chiefs were presented with a cheque of R1.5-million after finishing on top of the log at the end of the first quarter of the Premier Soccer League's Q-Innovation.

  • Wits were more convincing winners than a 2-0 scoreline suggested against Moroka Swallows in another Premiership match last night, Marc Strydom writes from Milpark Stadium.

Wits dominated most of the 90 minutes. The Students were enterprising and penetrative in attack, and tight in defence, in a classy all-round performance.

Wits opened the scoring in the 43rd when Calvin Kadi's shot was parried by goalie Greg Etafia into the path of Fathy Papy, who finished into an open goal. With Swallows pushing for an equaliser, their defence opened up in the 84th minute for Wits to get a deserved second, substitute Ofentse Nato slamming in Sibusiso Vilakazi's square pass across the area.
