LONDON - Liverpool failed to mark captain Steven Gerrard's 600th appearance for the club with a win when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United in the Premier League at Anfield which left them mired in mid-table yesterday.

Liverpool needed a well-taken 67th minute equaliser from Uruguay forward Luis Suarez to save a point after Newcastle took a first-half lead through Yohan Cabaye's stunning strike.

Earlier, Queens Park Rangers and Reading drew 1-1 at Loftus Road.

Gerrard was presented with a statue of Liverpool's city emblem, the liver bird, by former skipper Gary McAllister before the match when manager Brendan Rodgers compared him to Superman although not even his astonishing powers could bring victory.

Hatem Ben Arfa created Newcastle's goal with a superb run down the right before crossing for Cabaye who lashed the ball into the far corner of the net after 43 minutes.

Suarez levelled with an excellent goal when he controlled a long ball from Jose Enrique and rounded keeper Tim Krul to score.

Newcastle were then reduced to 10 men when captain Fabricio Coloccini was sent off for a careless lunge at Suarez in the closing stages.

The result left Newcastle in 10th place and Liverpool in 12th.

lRoberto Mancini insists he has no concerns about Manchester City's dip in form in front of goal ahead of their decisive Champions League group game against Ajax.

City failed to score in a goalless Premier League draw away to West Ham on Saturday after beating Swansea by just a single goal last time out. Mancini will hope his forwards can improve on that return when they face Ajax at Eastlands tomorrow in a game they must win to maintain a realistic chance of getting through to the knockout stages.

A failure to advance from the group phase would increase the pressure on Mancini, who has already been forced to respond to speculation linking former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola with a move to City. - Reuters and Sapa-AFP

Full Saturday results:

Fulham 2, Everton 2; Norwich 1, Stoke 0; Aston Villa 1, Sunderland 0; Swansea 1, Chelsea 1; Wigan 1, Tottenham 0; Man Utd 2, Arsenal 1; City 0, West Ham 0.
