Soccer player denies speeding and says he does not drink alcohol

There was no way soccer player Bryce Moon could avoid hitting pedestrian Mavis Ncube as she ran into the path of his car, the Randburg Magistrate’s Court heard on Monday.

Moon took the stand on Monday and testified.

He faces charges of murder, alternatively attempted murder, drunken driving, as well as reckless or negligent driving.

Moon hit Mavis Ncube while he was driving down Katherine Street in Sandhurst in 2009.

She was taken to the Morningside Clinic where she died of her injuries.

Moon said two pedestrians ran into the road as he entered a bend and that he swerved his Mercedes-Benz to the left to avoid hitting them.

“As I swerved, the second pedestrian [Ncube] ran into the direction I was driving towards and I couldn’t avoid her... it was too late for me to avoid her and I struck her,” Moon told the court.

The 26-year-old Wits player said he hit a wall after knocking Ncube down.

He then stepped out of the car, with his head bleeding, and sat on a tree stump and waited for help.

Moon said he was driving at a speed of between 60 and 70km per hour.

He had gone to pick up two friends who had attended a function with him the previous night.

Moon said he left his friends behind at the event around 1am and drove home. He told them to call him if they needed to be picked up.

“I got home, jumped into a shower and went to bed.”

His friends called him at 5am that morning and asked to be picked up.

The accident happened on the way, he said.

Moon told the court that he did not drink alcohol.

The trial continues.
