Mkhonza spoilt for choice

BANYANA Banyana head coach Joseph Mkhonza says he will be spoilt for choice when he decides on the 21 players to represent South Africa at the African Women's Championship in Equatorial Guinea starting on October 28.

The women's national team gathered in Johannesburg on Monday for a training camp, with overseas-based players Roxanne Barker, Kylie Ann Louw and Nompumelelo Nyandeni set to arrive next week.

"The Banyana Banyana players realise the importance of doing well at the CAF African Women's Championship, which will have a healthy impact on our current world and African ranking," Mkhonza said on Wednesday. "Nobody wants to miss out on competing in Africa's showpiece event."

Banyana Banyana are currently ranked 56th in the world and fourth in Africa. The national team won bronze at the 2010 African Women's Championship, which was hosted by South Africa.

"None of the ladies want to be left out of the national team so the competition for places is fierce," Mkhonza said.

The squad has been handed a clean bill of health, except for central defender Janine van Wyk, who has been sidelined by illness for the remainder of the week. Meanwhile, midfielder Mary Ntsweng has been absent for study reasons.

"We realise that we need to beef up the strike force and have invited some new faces to the camp in the hope of unearthing talent that can add value to our current crop of players," said Mkhonza.

Striker Silindile Ngubane has reported for national duty. Other new faces in the Banyana squad include goalkeeper BJ Dladla, defenders Zanele Dlamini and Charlotte Mshenge, speedy striker Makhanya Makhalala and midfielders Andisiwe Ndesi and Precious Matabologa.
