Mahamutsa out of Top 8

ORLANDO Pirates will have to do duty without Rooi Mahamutsa for the remainder of the MTN8 after the defender dramatically received a red card after the final whistle of their 0-0 draw against SuperSport United here yesterday.

Mahamutsa was given his marching orders after he kicked Thabiso Nkoane between the legs.

Teams competing for a spot in this lucrative competition are still evenly matched after the semifinal first-leg matches. This after Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows played to a 3-all draw on Saturday.

Not only were the players out to put a foot in the door for the spot in the final against the winner of the semifinals between Swallows and Sundowns, but they were also putting on a show to catch the attention of Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund, who was at the stadium yesterday with his assistants Thomas Madigage and Serame Letsoaka.

Bucs debutant Collins Mbesuma received a rapturous roar from the crowd as he made his first appearance in the famous black and white colours of Pirates for the last 15 minutes of the game.

After a topsy-turvy game midway through the first half both sides were evenly matched.

Pirates put their foot on the pedal in the latter stages of the stanza.

Their best chances of the first half came within five minutes, with the first being an attempt from striker Thulasizwe Mbuyane, whose shot from a tight angle inside the box shaved the face of the goalposts and found no teammate to finish it off.

In the 33rd minute defender Thabo Matlaba had a chance to put the defending champs ahead when he dribbled his way through Matsatsantsa's rearguard but the diminutive player was let down by his final touch.

With a minute before the half-time break, United's Edwin Gyimah received his marching orders with a red card from the referee after a dangerous tackle on midfielder Manti Moholo.

Despite a favourable possession and numerical advantage, the Buccaneers could not capitalise on their chances.
