RARELY has there been a season without a cup clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns and Sunday's meeting in Tshwane continues that tradition on Sunday.

The two clubs meet in a knockout encounter for the 26th time in as many years, reviving memories of some keenly contested matches in the past.

Chiefs have the upper hand over the Brazilians with 12 wins to four but most noticeable is that they have drawn nine cup ties in the past, close to 40% of their clashes.

That would indicate the potential of yet another tightly contested meeting between the two clubs in the MTN8 quarterfinal at Loftus Versfeld.

A goal from Mandla Masango settled their last cup encounter in favour of Chiefs in 2010 but the four matches before that had all ended in draws.

Should clash also finish without a winner after extra time, Chiefs will be hotly fancied in the subsequent shootout, where they have a 6-1 advantage over Sundowns.
