Banyana vs Cameroon match cancelled

BANYANA - Banyana's friendly against Cameroon, which was set to be played in Lille, France, tomorrow, has been cancelled, according to the South African Football Association.

This is due to the Cameroon Football Federation not being granted permission by Fifa, because the West Africans' application to stage the match was considered to be too late.

Instead, the national women's team will play a practice match against local club side Bayer 04 Leverkusen's ladies team on Thursday evening in Hennef, Germany.

They will not travel to France from Germany, where they arrived on Saturday, as they conclude their final preparations for the 2012 London Olympic Games set to begin in the last week of this month.

"There is not much we can do about the match. We were really looking forward to testing our strength against Cameroon," said Banyana coach Joseph Mkhonza.

"I believe Bayer 04 Leverkusen will also give us a lot of insight into how European teams play and we will go into that practice match with the same determination as though we were facing Cameroon."

The second friendly match against Britain will go ahead in Birmingham on Sunday.

"With less than 20 days to the start of the Olympics, we are hoping to use this time wisely in refining our skills ahead of the tournament," Mkhonza said. "We must remember that we began preparing for this tournament during the Olympic qualifiers last year. We need to carry forward what we have learnt as we prepare to take on the world's top athletes."

Banyana will begin their Group F Olympic campaign against Sweden on July 25 in Coventry, England.
