THE new Athletics South Africa board must speak with one voice to win medals at the Olympics and other global competitions. This is according to its new deputy president, Hendrick Ramaala, following their drama-filled elections in Kempton Park on Saturday.
James Evans was re-elected president after defeating Harold Adams by 33 to 24 votes.
"We are going to hit the ground running, the preparations for the 2013 World Championships and 2016 Olympic Games must start as early as this week. SA athletics must get back to winning ways in terms of coming back with medals at global competitions," Ramaala said.
He said the new board would also prioritise supporting budding athletes.
The former New York marathon winner was elected deputy president after beating former top sprinter Geradine Pillay by 31 to 26 votes.
Pillay was retained on the new board after being re-elected as athletes' repesentative.
Athletes and administrators, led by Stan Itshegetseng, demonstrated in front of the hotel where the elections took place, demanding that the Soweto marathon be handed over to clubs in Soweto to organise it.
Itshegetseng and company said they wanted Soweto clubs to benefit financially by organising the marathon themselves.
The Soweto marathon, brainchild of former ASA bosses Leonard Chuene and Banele Sindani, is organised by ASA.
The placard-carrying demonstrators dispersed peacefully after Itshegetseng was allowed to present their petition to ASA.
This came after police and private security guards of the hotel persuaded the protesters that their action was "illegal".
James Moloi was elected to lead the road-running commission. Andre Gobey will lead cross country and Pieter Lourens track and field.
Additional members are Esther Malema, Blanche Moila, Shireen Noble and Ntathu Gwadiso.
Mlungisi Mnyengeza will represent University Sport South Africa on the board.
