SIBONISO Gaxa will join an elite club by reaching the 50-cap mark if he gets to play in Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia in Rustenburg.

He will become the 19th player to reach the milestone in 20 years of Bafana Bafana football.

At the same time, Siyabonga Nomvethe will move to 80 matches and become the second most capped international in Bafana history, passing Benni McCarthy. The country's most capped player is former skipper Aaron Mokoena with 107 caps.

It has taken Gaxa seven years to get to the brink of the 50-cap mark.

Gaxa is not sure of a berth at fullback for the team at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday, where Anele Ngcongca is expected to start on the right and Tsepo Masilela on the left, but has proven competitive in challenging for a place and it will be a surprise if he does not get a run.

Teko Modise became the quickest Bafana player to reach 50 caps just before the 2010 World Cup. It took him just two days short of three years from his debut to his 50th match, far surpassing the previous milestone of five years and a couple of days held by Helman Mkhalele.
