LATEST Mamelodi Sundowns acquisition Thamsanqa Sangweni says he is ready for the challenge for regular game time facing him at the star-studded Chloorkop outfit.

The younger brother of Pirates and Bafana Bafana centre-back Siyabonga is one of the country's promising young midfielders.

But at Sundowns, the former AmaZulu midfielder will compete with the likes of Surprise Moriri, Musa Nyatama, Hlompho Kekana, Esrom Nyandoro, Themba Zwane and Solomon Okpako for game time.

AmaZulu general manager Peter O'Connor yesterday confirmed that the player had signed with Sundowns after expressing his desire to further his career at a bigger club in January.

But O'Connor wouldn't disclose the transfer fee, citing confidentiality restrictions.

"I'm happy to be at Sundowns," the soft-spoken Sangweni said. "I like the style of football they play."

Sangweni has been instrumental in his team's rise from the relegation doldrums to their second ever top-eight finish in Premier Soccer League history, chipping in with three league goals from deep in midfield.

The goalless draw with Kaizer Chiefs in their last fixture of the week on Saturday earned them a respectable seventh place finish, a notable achievement considering they languished in 15th position and were winless earlier in the season.

Sundowns have battled to attract top talent in recent times because of the rich, not to mention expensive, talent that often sits on the substitutes bench.

But the 23-year-old Sangweni said he wasn't worried about the possibility of his career stalling at his new club: "I know it won't be easy (to earn a starting place), but I have to do my job and then all things will follow."

Sangweni, who also attracted interest from Platinum Stars, was named as a standby in Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane's squad to face Ethiopia and Botswana in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers starting next week.
