AmaTuks' promotion celebrated

THE promotion of University of Pretoria to the Absa Premiership after winning the National First Division title was described as a major boost for soccer development in the province yesterday.

AmaTuks are the eighth Premier League club from Gauteng.

"For us in Gauteng the promotion of University of Pretoria into the Premiership is a major achievement in terms of soccer development. They have been trying to get to the top-flight league for almost six years," said MEC for sport Lebogang Maile.

"We would like to take this opportunity to welcome AmaTuks into the Premiership and wish them good luck. The team has a solid management, led by Rendani Mulaudzi and Kenneth Neluvhalani. We have no doubt they will do well."

Maile pointed to the university side's track record in identifying players who have risen to greater heights, like Andile Jali, Mthokozisi Yende, Lerato Chabangu and Robyn Johannes.

"This is another great soccer season for Gauteng. The National First Division champions are from this province and on Saturday we will see a club from Gauteng crowned Premiership champions."
