KAIZER Chiefs and Orlando Pirates may have delivered an extraordinary total of 31 past final meetings but a derby of a different kind is not uncommon in cup deciders.

Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United will play in a Tshwane derby, albeit in Soweto on May 26, to decide the destination of the Nedbank Cup.

It is the first cup final meeting between the two neighbours but not the first time clubs from the capital have decided a knockout cup title.

Sundowns beat Arcadia to two cup titles in 1988, winning first in the BP Top Eight Cup and then the Ohlsson's Challenge. Both cup finals were also decided in Johannesburg.

A replay was required for Sundowns to beat Arcadia in the Top Eight with Lovemore Chafunya scoring at the Rand Stadium for Stanley "Screamer" Tshabalala's side.

Two months later they won at Ellis Park in the Ohlsson's Challenge (previously known as the Champion of Champions and now discontinued) with a winning goal from Bennett Masinga.

There was an all-Cape Town final in 2003 when Santos beat Ajax Cape Town at the Athlone Stadium to win the Absa (now Nedbank) Cup in 2003.

Orlando Pirates' win over Jomo Cosmos in 1996 can be called a derby of sorts as can the win for the Buccaneers over Moroka Swallows in 1980 when the competition was still called the Mainstay Cup.

The only cup final derby delivered by Durban clubs came in the whites-only National Football League in 1972 when Durban United needed a replay to beat Durban City in the Castle Cup final.
