Chiefs set to dump Vlad V

VLADIMIR Vermezovic's future at Kaizer Chiefs will be decided this week - and the coach could already be in talks with SuperSport United for a job next season.

Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung confirmed yesterday that he, his father, club chairman Kaizer Motaung and the coach will begin a series of meetings from today to get to the bottom of the issues at the club. Vermezovic is likely to be accompanied by his agent.

The Serb joined Chiefs in 2009, but has failed to win the Absa Premiership title, stretching the club's league trophy drought to six years.

Not even the possibility of winning the Premier League and the Nedbank Cup this season is likely to save the coach, who is in the last year of his contract.

Sources at the club also confirmed that management had become dissatisfied with Vermezovic's methods and Chiefs' inconsistency. The coach also appears to still be in an experimental phase - three years into his contract with the club.

Motaung said he was unaware of the discussions between Vermezovic and former Premier League champions United who could give current coach Gavin Hunt the sack at the end of the season.

"He (Vermezovic) knows his job is based on the success of the team. If the team is not achieving things and is not succeeding, it's normal that we would part ways with the coach. You don't need a magician to pick that one up," said Motaung.

It has been a season to forget so far for the Chiefs management, supporters, players and the coach. Only once have Chiefs finished a season without a trophy: in 2002 under Ernst Middendorp. That year they also ended their campaign in ninth spot in the Premier League - their worst ever finish since the start of the PSL in 1996.

"We will definitely finalise all this by the end of the week so that the coach knows where he stands and where we are heading," said Motaung. "After being with us for three years, he knows the pressure that comes with him (not) producing results. We are going to be looking for solutions going forward and unfortunately there have been challenges for him in terms of where we are in the league."

Motaung said the fact that Vermezovic had not yet won the league during his time at Chiefs will be on the agenda today. He said speculation that Steve Komphela would succeed Vermezovic had unsettled the coach.

Asked about his plans for next season, Vermezovic said it was in the hands of his agent, but he "would like to stay in South Africa".

"To be part of such a big club and not have trophies to show for it is difficult to understand. And the supporters only want trophies, they don't care about our jobs during the week," he said.

"I have heard from some of my friends that Chiefs have started looking at other coaches. I won't take this personal, it's business. But I will fight until the end because I want to win the league and the Nedbank Cup."
