Sascoc's China deal slammed

PROUDLY South African will engage Sascoc to ensure that replicas of the uniform that will be worn by Team South Africa at the London Olympics are manufactured in the country.

"I will take the matter up with Sascoc and we are not going to compromise on this one," said PSA chief executive Leslie Sedibe.

"While we are preaching on a daily basis that we must buy and promote South African products, Sascoc chose to run out of the country to enter into a deal with a Chinese company.

"We must create jobs for our people."

The whole drama began after Sascoc unveiled ERKE as the new sponsor of their national teams until 2016. The deal is worth $4m (R31,5m).

"The news that the manufacturing of South Africa's national team kit is done in China is a mockery and an insult to efforts by local constituencies to promote local goods and services," said Sedibe.

Trade union federation Cosatu supports PSA and their media officer Patrick Craven said they demand that the deal with ERKE be cancelled with immediate effect.

At the launch of the attire last week, Sascoc president Gideon Sam said they decided to go to China after local sportswear companies snubbed them.

Sascoc chief executive Tubby Reddy said: "People are missing the point here, we are not buying (the replicas) from China.

"This is a sponsorship deal."
