The driver of soccer player Bryce Moon’s car was going faster than 120 kilometres an hour in a 60km/h zone shortly before an accident in which a woman died, the Randburg Magistrate’s Court heard today
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz coupe exceeded 120km/h when entering the curve of a road in a urban residential area, Metro Police officer Hugo Theunissen told the court.
Moon’s trial on charges of murder and drunken driving resumed in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
He allegedly hit Mavis Ncube with his Mercedes-Benz in Sandhurst, Johannesburg, on June 30, 2009.
Theunissen said the accident was caused only by human error.
“By exceeding the speed of 120km/h in the curve of the road, it caused the vehicle to drift before leaving the road,” he said.
In his opinion, Moon had driven recklessly and negligently, with no regard for pedestrians, Theunissen testified.
“It is clear that the driver did not concentrate on the road.”
He said it was clear that the driver had not attempted to steer the vehicle to the right after entering the curve, to keep the vehicle on the road.
He used toy cars to illustrate what the normal reactions would be of a driver threatened by an obstruction from the side.
Moon’s lawyer Naren Sangham would cross-examine Theunissen later.
