The student beats master

AUGUSTO Palacios was put to the sword on Saturday night by his protégé Steve Komphela.

Komphela's feisty Free State Stars brought Orlando Pirates' impressive cup run to a screeching stop with a 2-1 Nedbank Cup last 16 victory at Orlando Stadium.

Komphela worked under caretaker coach Palacios during the pair's days with Bafana Bafana in the 1990s.

Komphela admitted to having mixed feelings after flooring his old master when Stars dismissed the defending champions from the cup.

"Augusto made me captain of the national team. He introduced me to leadership. I am close to him," said Komphela after the victory. "I am happy we won but at the same time sad that the victory was achieved against my leader, mentor and coach.

"Before the game started, Augusto said 'today we have to kill each other' and no son can be happy of killing his own father. But it is football."

Stars will return to the shocking playing surface of Orlando Stadium on Wednesday for an Absa Premiership clash against the selfsame Pirates.

Bucs last tasted defeat in a cup match two years ago when Kaizer Chiefs beat them in the Telkom Knockout. But on Saturday night the Buccaneers ship hit an iceberg in the form of former Buccaneer Paulos Masehe.

Edward Manqele opened the scoring for Stars in the first half. It was his 13th goal of the season in all competitions.

Daine Klaite forced the match into extra time with a fantastic free-kick before Masehe had the final say with the winner.

Palacios bemoaned poor passing and failure to convert the few chances his side created. Ndumiso Mabena had an awful night and felt the wrath of the fans who called for his substitution.

But Palacios is determined not to let the Pirates supporters dictate to him.

Meanwhile Thamsanqa Sangweni's stunning first-half strike was enough for AmaZulu to clinch their place in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over Witbank Spurs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.

The only goal came in the 29th minute when midfielder Sangweni unleashed a thunderous volley that gave Briace Msiza no chance in the visiting goal.
