A 70-YEAR-OLD Eastern Cape grandmother is to promote a title fight later this month - between two women boxers.

Gladys "Noforty" Tsenene, who has seven grandchildren, is no stranger to boxing promotions.

Last year she staged a tournament in Port Alfred, but that was between two men for the national junior flyweight title. Now she wants to give the women a chance, she says.

Tsenene believes that women's boxing is neglected in South Africa, which has one world champion in Noni Tenge. The 30-year-old from Mdantsane is holder of the WBF and IBF welterweight titles.

"I am a mother and it makes sense for me to promote a women's national title fight," said Tsenene, a former shebeen queen.

She will stage the fight in Port Elizabeth between Mukondeleli Ndou and Bukiwe Nonina for the vacant SA bantamweight title. The tournament is scheduled for New Brighton on March 17.

Although she has been unable to attract sponsors, Tsenene said she would not be deterred.

She no longer has Caiphus Ntente doing matchmaking and has decided to take up that role herself.

"I know this sport very well," Tsenene said.
