Hopes for hoops revival rise

AFTER a successful meeting with the National Basketball Association, Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula is hopeful the process of reviving the sport in South Africa will bear fruit.

Mbalula returned from Orlando in the US this week, where he had gone to watch the All Star basketball festival.

He used the opportunity to exchange ideas with the NBA on the development of basketball in SA.

"The minister discussed establishing a basketball development programme with the focus on schools," his spokesman, Paena Galane, said.

"We have been advised to invest our time and resources in both school and university leagues. Resources from the NBA and government should go to school and university leagues. We won't be able to produce quality players if we neglect our schools.

"In the US, learners with potential in basketball are offered bursaries at the universities to help them further their studies."

Some of the South Africans who studied and played basketball in the US include Emmarentia Ledwaba, Sophie Ngobeni, Tshilidzi Nephawe, Chris Avanant, Chris Gabriel and Rafeeka Justin.
