Fabio quits England over Terry

LONDON - Fabio Capello resigned as England manager yesterday, the English FA said in a statement.

The Italian coach's resignation came after he met with FA chairman David Bernstein to discuss the ruling body's decision to remove the England captaincy from defender John Terry until he stands trial in July for racially abusing an opponent.

"In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio's resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England manager with immediate effect," the FA said.

Capello disagreed with the FA's decision to strip Terry of the captaincy.

"I would like to stress that during today's meeting and throughout his time as England manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner," the FA added.

"We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future."

Terry is charged with racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match in October.

  • Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp was yesterday cleared of tax evasion, a 12-0 victory via a British jury that removes a key barrier to his chances of becoming England's next coach.
