ZAMBIAN soccer legend Kalusha "King Kalu" Bwalya is excited that Chipolopolo are well on track to accomplish their goal of winning a medal at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
The southern Africa country qualified for the quarterfinals after a 1-0 win over co-hosts Equatorial Guinea in Bato on Sunday night.
Chipolopolo skipper and former Jomo Cosmos striker Christopher "Tsunami" Katongo scored the decisive goal to help Zambia qualify for the last eight.
The win saw Zambia finish on top of Group A on seven points. Equatorial Guinea are also through to the quarterfinals despite the setback.
Libya finished on four points and Senegal ended their campaign at the bottom of the log without point.
"We are delighted that we did not only qualify for the knockout stages, we finished the group stages on top of the log," said Bwalya, who is also the president of Football Association of Zambia.
In the previous tournament in Angola in 2010, Zambia were eliminated in the quarterfinals after losing to Nigeria on penalties.
"When we started with our preparations for this tournament, we made it clear we want to better our 2010 performance," said Bwalya.
"I'm extremely proud of the team. We made a programme that we believed in from the day we started with the preparations of the tournament. I am happy for the people of Zambia for their belief in Chipolopolo. It is a fantastic day for our national team."
Some of the South Africa-based players with Chipolopolo include Isaac Chansa, Collins Mbesuma, Joseph Musonda, Kennedy Mweene and Clifford Mulenga.
