Wits to try out Haiti's Bayonne

HAITIAN striker Gilbert Bayonne was expected here yesterday in search of greener pastures in the Premier Soccer League.

This comes after former South African player-turned-coach Rudi Mbele recommended US-based Bayonne to BidVest Wits coach Roger de Sa.

Mbele was born and raised in Soweto but spent more than 10 years furthering his studies in the US, where he also a soccer player.

"I had a meeting with Roger where we discussed the possibility of Gilbert coming to play for Wits and he agreed to allow him to come and train with the club," Mbele said yesterday. "Gilbert is a very strong striker in the mould of (Chelsea's) Didier Drogba. He is ruthless in front of goal and I have no doubt he will pass the trials with flying colours.

"His is 1.89m tall and his height and strength will come in handy against many defenders in the PSL. Gilbert was born and grew up in the USA but is playing for Haiti's national team.

"His parents originate from Haiti and he holds dual citizenship in Haiti and America.

"The PSL is a big brand globally and it is not surprising we are seeing big-name players coming to play in the country."

Mbele, the co-founder of Rudi Ravens development club in Soweto, initially wanted to take Bayonne to SuperSport United.

"I was hoping to speak to (SuperSport United chairman) Khulu Sibiya, but Roger gladly agreed to assess Gilbert."

Mbele also said plans were at an advanced stage to bring Major Soccer League affiliate New England to SA later this year. "Roger has agreed that Wits will play them," he said.
