Mutola tipped to coach Semenya

FORMER world and Olympic 800m champion Maria Mutola of Mozambique is set to take over as Caster Semenya's new coach this week.

Semenya is restructuring her management team after firing her coach, Michael "Sponge" Seme, in a dramatic turn of events last week, ending a four-year marriage.

In the build-up to the world championships in South Korea where Semenya won a silver medal last month, relationship between the athlete and Seme was strained. This was after Seme complained that Semenya was "overweight" because she had not been training on a regular basis.

"I had not seen Caster since she came back from the world championships, until she rocked up at our training venue last Monday," said Seme. "Caster came to fetch her friend Violet (Raseboya), that's when she told me it was over. I don't know who is coaching her after she ended our relationship."

Our deep throats informed us that Semenya wants the Johannesburg- based Mutola to take over from Seme as her coach.

"Caster wants to win gold at the 2012 London Olympics, which is why she is restructuring her team," said the source close to the developments.

"Don't be surprised if you hear an announcement that Maria is her new coach. She has decided to take advantage of the fact that Maria is based in Johannesburg," said the source.

Mutola, who resumed her soccer career after she was forced to retire from athletics due to injuries four years ago, is the only woman in Southern Africa to win gold at the Olympics, her greatest moment coming at the Sydney Games in 2000.

Semenya was not available for comment but Mutola, who is playing for Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, said: "Caster and I are working on something. We'll make an announcement."
