A Khama Billiat-inspired Ajax Cape Town brought Mamelodi Sundowns' impressive Premiership run to a screeching halt with a 3-2 victory here yesterday

Billiat's last-minute winner not only proved the difference in the end, but underlined Ajax's spirited fight-back after trailing to a Lebogang Mokoena half hour goal before Thembinkosi Fanteni equalised on the hour.

An inspired Ajax took the game to the home side and were rewarded when Nhlanhla Vilakazi pounced on a rebound to put Ajax in the lead. The Brazilians lost the plot.

But Punch Masenamela got their groove back turning superbly to thunder in the equaliser with 10 minutes to go.

In the end, Billiat had the final word on this spell-binding match.

Having started ideally, the Brazilians ended up putting their supporters through a wringer, as the visitors turned on the magic.

After their league championship title-charge crumbled in this venue last season, Ajax appeared fully aware of the danger of letting Downs off the hook.

Sundowns dominated the opening half, not really utterly but impressively and they had a goal to underline their superiority.

Back in the starting line-up, and a morale boosting selection for the senior national side Bafana Bafana for their game against Niger, Nyatama returned with his usual swagger, tearing Ajax's defence apart as he sprayed delightful passes from the heart of midfield.

One such pass led to the opening goal.

Nyatama began the move, laid off to Katlego Mphela, who attempted a shot which was cleared by Thulani Hlatshwayo but unfortunately onto the path of Lebogang Mokoena who blasted in the opener.

Ajax, however, were never out of it and that much they showed with their fight back to grind out a win.

What a game!

l Free State Stars and Bidvest Wits drew 0-0 at Charles Mopeli Stadium in another match played yesterday.
