SPORT and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has honoured South African soccer fans for their immense contribution in the success of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Also honoured at Serengeti Lodge, near Tembisa, on Friday night posthumously was Orlando Pirates No 1 supporter Johannes "Mzion" Mofokeng, who passed on last month.

This formed part of the inaugural Andrew Mlangeni Green Jacket Night of Legends where 24 South Africans involved in sports were honoured.

The recipients received R10 000 in unit trusts sponsored by Old Mutual.

The legends who were presented with the Andrew Mlangeni Green Jacket included Penny Heyns, Baby Jake Matlala, Brian Mitchell, Makhaya Ntini, Josias Thugwane and Lucas Radebe.

"In our build-up to the South African Sports Awards, we saw it fit to recognize men and women who made the country proud in sports," said Mbalula.

The South African Sports Awards were held in Sun City last night. One of prominent Pirates' fans, Moipone Moorosi, was also honoured. Other fans honoured included Saddam Maake, Masilo Machaka (Chiefs) Collin Nxumalo (Jomo Cosmos), Gladys Bailey (Ajax Cape Town), Ivan Geldert, Thomas Mokhari (Swallows), Mamello Makha, Botha Msila (Bloemfontein Celtic) and Robert Nkosi (Mamelodi Sundowns).
