WHILE Bidvest Wits cemented their place in the top eight of the Premier Soccer League table heading into the mid-season break, midfielder Sifiso Myeni broke his shin bone in their 2-1 win over Platinum Stars on Wednesday.

Coach Roger de Sa confirmed Myeni's injury after the player was taken to hospital in an ambulance shortly after the final whistle. The tackle came in the second half, and the player knew immediately that he had suffered a break as the medical staff attended to him.

"He broke the shin bone. It looks like it was a total break. His foot was facing the wrong direction totally. He knew straight away," said De Sa.

Team doctor Lervasen Pillay clarified the specifics of the injury on the club's website.

"Sifiso Myeni was tackled and sustained a left ankle fracture dislocation which had to be reduced immediately, so we're going to investigate it further and see what the X-rays and MRIs show, and we'll book him into hospital," explained Pillay.

De Sa said he did not blame the tackler, but instead the bad angle of the challenge that caused the injury.

"It wasn't a malicious or vicious tackle, but more the angle the tackle was made from, and it was awkward," said De Sa.

"I don't think it was with intent, and it happens in football."

De Sa was optimistic, despite the blow to one of his key players, saying the extended league break would give the player time to recover.

"I just hope he can recover as quickly as possible and maybe these two months' break will be in his favour a bit now," the coach said.
