Ramaala part of top team

SPORTS Interchange Athletics Club has partnered with former New York Marathon winner Hendrick Ramaala in his project to develop the sport in Gauteng.

"We have decided to join forces with Hendrick who has been quietly doing a great job in helping to develop athletics," said club chairman Sam Mlangeni.

The Hendrick Ramaala Development Athletics Series was launched in Orange Farm at the weekend with various athletics activities for various age groups in the juniors section.

"It went very well. We were happy that community members were also present to show their support for the project to keep their children away from the streets," said Mlangeni.

"We will identify athletes with potential, who will be taken to a training camp where Hendrick will take them through their paces.

"Parents and guardians are happy that Hendrick has started a project to train their children during the festive season holidays and beyond.

"Drugs and alcohol are destroying our communities, we want to use athletics to educate the youth that they can make money from the sport and earn millions like Usain Bolt."

Mlangeni, a former runner himself, said they were looking for financial assistance from the corporate world to spread the development project to other areas.
