Lesotho out but not down

LESOTHO may have failed to qualify for the 2011 Metropolitan Cosafa Under-20 Soccer Cup semifinals, but coach Mohao "Bomber" Matete is happy they have laid a solid foundation for the 2013 African Youth Championships qualifiers starting in March.

Makoanyane XI, as the Lesotho Under-20 team are known, ended their campaign at the tournament with a 3-1 win over Seychelles at Molepolole Stadium on Monday night.

But the victory was not good enough for Lesotho to go through to the knockout stages after they narrowly went down 2-1 to Zimbabwe in their opening game of the tournament on Saturday, a game they had no business to lose.

"I'm happy with our overall performance, although I still maintain we should have defeated Zimbabwe in our first game. Our players were a little reserved in that game," said the legendary Matete, who is also a former captain of Likoena.

"Against Seychelles, we put up a great show but the win was not good enough. This tournament has helped us lay a solid foundation for the qualifiers of the 2013 African Youth Championships."
