KAIZER Chiefs have their goalkeeper Arthur Bartman to thank for this massive victory when they pipped Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in their premiership game in Pretoria yesterday.

The win moved Amakhosi up to fourth place on the PSL log. Chiefs have also narrowed the gap between them and log leaders SuperSport United to just four points.

And Bartman played a significant role in securing the crucial three points.

The oldest player on the pitch at 39, Bartman produced a man of the match performance when he pulled off five goal-bound saves to keep Amakhosi in the game from the start of the game till the final whistle.

Chiefs took an early lead in the 12th minute when defender Thomas Sweswe connected with Siphiwe Tshabalala's cross to score the only goal of the match.

It was all Sundowns from then on, launching counter-attacks but failing to find the back of the net. The first of a series of match-winning saves from Bartman started two minutes after Chiefs broke the deadlock.

Teko Modise, Sundowns captain for a second successive game, surged forward with the help of midfield partner Elias Pelembe. The result of that attack was a tame shot that could have been tricky for Bartman had it found him in an awkward position. In the 18th minute, the home team again enjoyed most of the ball possession and made good use of it by pinning the pressure on the visitors.

Hlompho Kekana thought he had grabbed the equaliser when Bartman was outstretched - doing enough to push the ball for a corner kick. Chiefs were running out of ideas with their defenders joined by central midfielders Tinashe Nengomasha and Lucky Baloyi to help out in defence as they couldn't contain the fire-power from Sundowns.

In the 28th minute Themba Zwane broke away on the right flank, getting the better of Chiefs left-back Jimmy Jambo and setting up Pelembe.

The Mozambique international got his shot on target, but Bartman stopped it .

Pelembe also turned into a provider after beating two Chiefs defenders and laid off a perfect ball for Richard Henyekane.

The Chiefs goalie again denied the Sundowns striker, who was just 10m out. Sundowns could have eventually beaten Bartman in the 33rd minute and later in the second half, but they had no luck in front of goal.

l Goals by George Maluleka and Matthew Booth steered Ajax Cape Town to a 2-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at the Cape Town Stadium in another league match yesterday.

l AmaZulu and Maritzburg United shared the spoils when they played to a goalless draw in a drab KwaZulu-Natal derby at Moses Mabhida Stadium, reports Canaan Mdletshe.
