SA draw in Gabon game

FOR a second match in a row, South Africa's Under-23 team threw away a one-goal lead and control of the game to draw 1-1 against Group B minnows Gabon in their CAF U-23 Championship game here last night.

Following a draw by the same scoreline against Ivory Coast on Sunday, South Africa now need a win in their final game against a well-organised, technically sound Egypt in Saturday night's game to reach the semifinals.

The South Africans controlled the game for the first 60 minutes and spurned a hatful of chances to make the game safe either side of Mandla Masango's 40th-minute opening goal.

Coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba might admit his premature use of all three substitutes within 15 minutes of the break broke his side's impetus, playing some role in Gabon equalising through substitute Johan Lengoualama in the 80th.

The West Africans were reduced to 10 men with a red card to goalkeeper Willy Mikiela in the 87th, a dismissal that came too late to allow South Africa back into the game.
