Overturn bad calls: Mokoena

FREE State Stars plan to propose to the South African Football Association that its referees review committee be given powers to overturn wrong decisions made by match officials.

This comes after Stars managed only two points out of a possible nine from three matches where they were denied legitimate goals by the men in black.

The latest incident was when Edward Manqele's clear goal was ruled off- side in their 1-1 draw with Platinum Stars in Bohlokong on Saturday.

Furious Stars chairman Mike Mokoena told Sowetan yesterday: "The Saturday incident was the third where we were denied three points by the referees. The first one was against SuperSport United where two goals were disallowed and we also had a goal disallowed against Bloemfontein Celtic. In the same game against Celtic, we should have been awarded a penalty but we were denied.

"I'm sick and tired of referees coming to me afterwards to say 'we are sorry'. Saying sorry won't help us if we are relegated. We would be joint log leaders right now if we were awarded those seven points. I have decided to write a letter to the Premier Soccer League to ask Safa to look into the possibility of giving the review committee (the power) to overturn wrong decisions by the referees. It is happening in other countries.

"My heart always bleeds every time I hear (Safa review committee member) Sylvester Ndaba on television on Monday saying we should have been awarded a goal or penalty.

"Enough is enough, the actions of the referees must come to an end. They must be suspended for six months. We shouldn't even relegate them to the National First Division because they know they will still be earning money."

Safa referees committee chairman Alpha Mchunu could not be reached for comment.
