CENTRAL Gauteng Athletics wants legends like Bobang Phiri, Lawrence Peu and Gibeon Moshaba back in the sport to assist in their development programmes.

CGA president James Moloi is inviting the legends of athletics in his province to come to a meeting at Germiston Stadium on Sunday at 2pm. "We want to actively involve the legends in the sport on the development programme that we are doing. We also want them to offer motivational talks to young athletes," Moloi said.

"For example, Bobang Phiri will be responsible for the West Rand, Gibeon Moshaba for Katlehong, and Lawrence Peu for KwaThema and surrounding areas.

"We will take our legends in the province to courses and workshops so that they will be qualified to run our development programmes.

"They will be working closely with coaches of clubs in the townships, some of them will also serve as team managers to the national championships.

'There will be allowances for them and we will also engage the office of MEC Lebogang Maile in the department of sport, arts, culture and recreation for assistance."

Meanwhile, the CGA talent identification track and field meeting will take place at the University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus tomorrow.

The event targets kids who never participated in any track and field event and also those that might have potential talent in any of these events.

CGA general manager Mandla Radebe said the targeted age groups are between six and 17 in sprints, middle distances, jumps and throws.

Legends like Zithulele Sinqe, Hendrick Ramaala, Atlanta Olympics silver medallist Hezekiel Sepeng, Moshaba, Rene Kalmer, Lebo and Lebogang Phalula, will be present.
