Clubs out to woo more fans

THE 2011 Rugby World Cup might be over, but the Gauteng provincial government is continuing with the Magnificent Fridays campaign to garner support for professional soccer clubs in the province.

The department of sport, arts, culture and recreation hopes to use the campaign to encourage people in the province to attend PSL matches in big numbers.

MEC Lebogang Maile said yesterday: "We are worried by the poor attendance at some of the games, hence we are creating a platform for clubs to market themselves. The campaign is also a golden opportunity for clubs in Gauteng to interact with their supporters and discuss their vision with the fans."

The province has seven clubs in the PSL.

They are league champions Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Jomo Cosmos, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United, Moroka Swallows and BidVest Wits.

Also on board in this campaign initiated by Maile are the Sedibeng district municipality and the Emfuleni local municipality.

"We are starting with our Magnificent Fridays campaign in Evaton where we will be accompanied by a host of sporting legends," Maile said.

Proceedings will include road shows in an open bus through Mandela Square in Sebokeng, via the Palm Springs Mall and culminating in the main event at the Evaton Plaza.

"This is done following what has been seen as dwindling number of supporters at the soccer matches held in Gauteng, which has prompted some teams to take their home games outside the province," Maile said.

"Our clubs will hold exhibitions as part of the festivities at the malls, clubs will also use the platform to recruit new supporters through membership drives. We want to complement Gauteng's status as the home of champions by promoting the passion for being a true supporter of sport by all in the province."

Maile said that they will also organise coaching clinics for different sporting codes including soccer, boxing, cricket, rugby, swimming and athletics.
