Sascoc wants Safa to explain Afcon blunder

THE South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee has demanded an explanation from Safa on Bafana Bafana's failure to qualify for the 2012 Afcon finals.

Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy also wants Safa to explain the roles of its national executive committee and coaching staff in the misinterpretation of rules.

In a letter to Safa president Kirsten Nematandani, Reddy said: "It is unfortunate that our country has not qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations due to be held in 2012.

"In consultation with the minister (of sport, Fikile Mbalula), both the ministry of SRSA (Sport and Recreation SA) and Sascoc are concerned with the negative publicity around the apparent misunderstanding and interpretation of the rules governing this competition under the banner of the Confederation of Africa Football.

"We therefore appeal to you to please provide us with a full and concise explanation as to the misinterpretation of the rules which resulted in non-qualification for this prestigious event on the African continent.

"In this regard a clear explanation must be given as to the roles played by the officials of Safa and the coaching staff of Bafana Bafana who are involved in the question of the misinterpretation (of the rules).

"As this matter is considered very serious and very critical, please revert with this explanation on or before Friday, 21 October 2011."

Safa top brass finally owned up on Wednesday to the Bafana Bafana Afcon mess with Nematandani apologising to the government, sponsors and the nation at large.

The federation's CEO Robin Petersen went on by saying they would look into their internal structures to ensure people were held accountable and that such glaring errors were not repeated in future.
