Top sports star scores

THE 2010 South African Sports Star of the Year will drive away with a brand new Lexus and a cheque for R250,000 at Sun City on Sunday night.

"When we announced that we were reviving the sports awards, people thought it was a joke. We are serious," said Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula.

"This is not just another gathering of sports people, no ways. It is an event that we want the entire nation to talk about for a long time.

"I want to see our sports awards becoming one of the major events in South Africa, so we are also inviting some of the big stars in Hollywood and other parts of the world."

The nominees for the Sport Star of the Year are Noko Matlou (soccer), Hashim Amla (cricket), Cecil Africa (rugby), Cameron van der Burgh (swimming) and Charles Schwartzel (golf).

Mbalula's spokesperson, Paena Galane, said the Sport Star of the Year winner was voted for by the public through the SMS line 34760.

To vote, SMS the word SPORTS followed by "A" for Matlou (football), "B" for Amla (cricket), "C" for Afrika (sevens rugby), "D" for Van der Burgh (swimming) or "E" for Schwartzel (golf).

The winner will be announced by reigning Miss South Africa Bokang Montjane and former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe.

Some of the other South Africans nominated for the other awards include Thulani Serero (soccer), Louis "LJ" van Zyl, Luvo Manyonga (both athletics), Kgothatso Montjane (wheelchair tennis) and Peter "Poison" Thage (karate).

Soccer bosses Nomsa Mahlangu and Danny Jordaan will fight it out for the Administrator of the Year award. Jordaan will also be presented with a Lifetime Achievement award along with Irvin Khoza and Molefi Oliphant.

"All nominees will get R10000 in the form of unit trusts from Old Mutual.

"Category winners will receive R50000, with the exception of the Sports Star of the Year," Galane said.
