Mnguni says sorry for storming the ring

VETERAN Eastern Cape boxing promoter Mzimasi Mnguni yesterday apologised unconditionally for his unbecoming behaviour that sparked chaos at Orient Theatre on Sunday.

He stormed the ring and manhandled referee Allan Matakane after he had stopped the national junior lightweight title fight between Godfrey Nzimande and his boxer Ayanda Yaphi.

Mnguni fell short of throwing a punch.

Nzimande from Limpopo, who fights out of Gauteng under trainer Nick Durandt, retained his belt via an eighth-round stoppage. He and Durandt were hiding in the dressing room when the decision was made.

"I want to apologise from the bottom of my heart to the entire boxing fraternity and most importantly SuperSport, who televised the fight," Mnguni said yesterday. "I don't have proper words to explain how I feel about what happened."

Matakane was escorted out of the arena by police and security guards as fans bayed for his blood.
