Milenkovic takes champs on the road

INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed boxing promoter Branco Milekovic and his four IBF world champions could be lost to the international arena due to the continuing black-out on boxing by the SABC.

The champions are mini-flyweight king Nkosinathi "Mabere" Joyi, junior featherweight holder Takalani "The Panther" Ndlovu, flyweight kingpin Moruti "Baby Face" Mthalane and the first-ever female IBF welterweight holder Noni "She Bee Stingin" Tenge.

Milenkovic used to take local boxers beyond our borders in the past but he stopped after the SABC gave him more dates.

His boxers enjoyed home advantage and triumphed in their assignments.

Joyi, Mthalane, Ndlovu and Tenge benefited from Milenkovic and the SABC's cordial relationship. Joyi, Mthalane and Ndlovu won their title eliminators here at home and also annexed the titles in a local boxing ring. The SABC televised all these fights live on Blow by Blow.

Tenge became an overnight sensation by winning the world title from New Zealander Daniella Smith two weeks ago. This historic first female world championship featuring an African female fighter took place in Brakpan and it was also not televised.

Milenkovic announced yesterday that his international trek with his champions begins on September 24 in Italy.

He said Mthalane would make his mandatory defence against Italian No 3 contender Andrea Sarritzu.

"We are not beggars," Milenkovic said straight up yesterday.

"We will make sure that our fighters are kept busy and benefit financially from their belts. I didn't hesitate for one minute to take Mthalane's fight to Italy because I have faith in Mthalane.

"The fact that he beat a credible fighter in Julio Miranda speaks volumes about Mthalane's capability. Even when his fight with Nonito Doniare in Las Vegas was stopped in round six due to a bad cut inside his eye, Mthalane was beginning to find his rhythm."

Mthalane, whose skills are honed by Nick Durandt, boasts 27 (KOs 18) and two losses while Sarritzu, the European champion, has 32 (KOs 12), four defeats and four draws.
