FORMER Moroka Swallows and Zulu Royals defender Mthunzi "Shadow" Kota has died.

Kota, arguably one of the best centre-backs this country has ever produced, died after a short illness and though information about his death and the funeral service were still sketchy yesterday, Swallows' veteran official Godfrey Gxowa said their former star defender was likely to be buried in Soweto on Sunday.

"That's the information I got so far but I will meet the family to get more information in that regard," Gxowa said.

"I heard about his death on Sunday and I was saddened by the news.

"Shadow was a player who was made of stern stuff.

"He was the father of centre-backs and I cannot remember any player who matched him. He was intelligent and had pace."
