Sponsorship a top bet: Arendse

FORMER Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Andre Arendse has praised sports betting specialist Topbet for its R2million sponsorship of the Randburg Association Football Club (RAFC) in Johannesburg, spread over five years.

The club, which boasts five soccer fields, caters for more than 800 players from the under-6 age group to masters, veterans and even a women's team.

Arendse, who is also the owner of Safe Hands Goalkeeping School (SHS), said it was vital for corporate South Africa to get involved in soccer.

"SHS is proud to be associated with RAFC. I have an incredible passion for developing young talent," Arendse said.

"It is vital to have the required financial backing in order to assist the process of guiding this young talent to the highest level of world football as well as leadership roles."

Mike O' Connor, owner of the company, said: "Football is the sport of the African nation. Through this joint venture everyone will scale greater heights."

RAFC chairperson Gordon Naidoo said they were happy to have acquired the sponsorship, the bulk of which will go towards their huge maintenance bill.

Naidoo said they spend more than R300000 a year to maintain their five grounds, which were upgraded by the Local Organising Committee during the 2010 World Cup.

He said about half of their members are "African players drawn from areas like Diepsloot, Alexandra, Soweto, Windsor and here in Randburg as well as surrounding suburbs".

He said the club sponsors close to 10 percent of its poorer members whose parents cannot afford the fees and kit for a season.

RAFC's women's team is known as Croesus Team and campaigns in the South African Football Association's Sasol League.
