Ajax team to beat as Sundowns draw

Matthew Pattison set up Katlego Mphela to score his 13th goal of the season - to level with Kaizer Chiefs' striker Knowledge Musona as the league's leading goal-scorers

AJAX Cape Town now look firm favourites to win their first Absa Premiership after Mamelodi Sundowns threw away two valuable points when they drew 1-1 against AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium last night.

The result could be a relief for Orlando Pirates who remain second on the log.

The stalemate, however, moved Usuthu from 12th spot to 11th, unseating their struggling homeboys Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Katlego "Killer" Mphela put the visitors in the lead when he scored in the 33rd minute.

The visitors looked as if they would be heading to the break ahead, but that was not to be after an own goal by Siyanda Xulu.

The young defender's header beat his own goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands when he tried to clear off a long-range effort from Sibusiso Hadebe on the stroke of half time.

Matthew Pattison set up Mphela to score his 13th goal of the season to level with Kaizer Chiefs' striker Knowledge Musona as the league's leading goal-scorers.

Mphela came close to scoring his second goal of the match in the 72nd minute but he delivered a tame shot that went wide.

Patrice Motsepe and chief scout Trott Moloto were seen raising their hands in the air in disbelief after Mphela, who had had sent two AmaZulu's defenders for a cheap dummy, failed to find the net.

The match attracted a sizeable number of Chiefs supporters who backed Usuthu after the Brazilians dented Amakhosi's title hopes with a 2-0 thumping at Loftus Stadium on Sunday.

AmaZulu remain winless in eight matches in the league.
