Chiefs maul Bidvest Wits' boys

KAIZER Chiefs turned Bidvest Wits's home ground into their temporary home base with an emphatic 4-0 victory yesterday, setting the stage for new Nedbank Cup champions to be crowned on May 28.

A crowd of slightly more than 4000 fans crammed into the university field to witness a goal feast dished out by the Amakhosi.

Reigning champions Wits showed no fighting spirit, were leaky at the back and gave the Amakhosi too much space as they booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Chiefs hadn't reached the last eight of the Cup since it started in 2008.

Perhaps spurred on by their fading PSL hopes, Chiefs put two attackers - Knowledge "Smash and Grab" Musona and S'thembiso Ngcobo - up front.

It proved too much for the Clever Boys' defence, led by Tefu Mashamaite.

Goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala in the 13th minute and Ngcobo in the 34th minute did the damage and the Clever Boys dropped their heads going into the second half. Tshabalala, who also created the second goal, grabbed a third in the 74th minute.

Tshabalala's replacement George Lebese begged to take a free-kick for the Amakhosi, and made no mistake.

The two teams took each other on in a league match four days before yesterday's cup game, but only Chiefs looked like they had done their homework.

Wits were without their deadly striker Bhongolwethu "Powerball" Jayiya, who is cup-tied having played for the Wits colts team in the early stages of the tournament.

  • In Welkom, Black Leopards eliminated amateur side BTX Liverpool 3-1 through goals by Dingaan Masanabo (28th, 74th), Rodney Ramakgalela (25th) for Leopards and Mafanyane Motimiti (80th).

The quarterfinals draw will take place in Johannesburg this morning.
